Why including all of you is important in singing.
Zooming in and zooming out - both are helpful, and both are needed. Many teachers and singers tend to focus only on the zooming in part, and that is less than helpful in our overall singing training. This is because it is the zooming out that allows our body to assimilate all of that zooming in that we've been doing. In addition to that (very important) idea, the reality is that we are whole beings. If I were to walk around all the time focusing on my left foot, I would probably run into something. Our bodies are meant to function as whole units, and our singing is no different. Our instrument is very unique in that it is the only instrument that is housed within our body. Our instrument is part of our body and our body is part of our instrument. In order to help our instrument function fully and optimally, we have to let it be part of our body and not be zoomed in on our two tiny vocal folds or breathing or whatever it is that you're focusing on at the moment. Yes, we do need to zoom in at times to work on a specific technical aspect, but we also then need to zoom back out to let that little part function within the context of our entire body in the way which it was designed to do.
