Text Undoing Habitual Tension: A New Way to Free Your Voice

Have you ever felt like you’ve hit a wall with your voice? Maybe you’ve taken the lessons, done the warm-ups, watched all the tutorials - and still, something feels… stuck. You’re not alone. What many singers don’t realize is that tension - especially habitual, unconscious tension - can be the hidden culprit behind vocal limitations. And no amount of “sing it again” will fully unlock your voice until you address the root of that tension.

But here’s the good news: tension isn’t permanent. And freeing your voice doesn’t require you to be a different person - just a more connected one.

So what exactly is habitual tension? Habitual tension is the kind you don’t even know you’re carrying. It’s your body’s autopilot. Things like:

  • Clenching your jaw without realizing it
  • Lifting your shoulders every time you inhale
  • Holding your belly tight when you sing high notes
  • Locking your knees or curling your toes in performance

These things aren’t “bad habits,” they’re just your body doing what it learned to do to feel safe or efficient. But over time when your body no longer needs these patterns, they can interfere with vocal function, breath flow, resonance, and expression.

So how do you undo tension? Not by pushing harder or trying to “fix” yourself. Instead, we practice noticing. Yes...noticing. With kindness.

The foundation of BodyInformed voice work is recognizing the deep connection between your body, your breath, your nervous system, and your voice. We use simple tools and awareness techniques to bring these pieces back into conversation with each other.

It’s not about perfect posture. It’s about permission. Permission to release, permission to explore, permission to move in new ways. When you bring awareness to where you're holding, your body begins to offer up new possibilities...and your voice follows.
