Contemporary Alexander Technique

Alexander Technique is great for any activity and also for other things such as pain, discomfort, habits you’ve noticed that you wish to change, trauma and how reactions show up in the body among other things. For singers, Alexander Technique is ideal because we know that we use our entire body/instrument in singing and often times things such as negative tension and interference create issues with our singing.

I am in my final year of my 1600+ hour certification to become a contemporary Alexander Technique teacher. While an internet search might give you 20 different definitions (especially depending on whether you’re reading from a traditional or contemporary AT teacher), here is my current thinking:

Alexander Technique is a (re)-educational system where we study you - the way you’re doing things or responding to situations and the quality with which you’re doing them. It can be helpful if you’ve noticed pain or discomfort in an activity or situation, or even if you’re just curious if there’s a different way. We look to make sure you aren’t working harder than you need to in any way (physically, ideas, etc.). We also help you learn to direct your body in a manner that can help shift patterns and habits that are no longer serving you because while we know that your body is perfect and intelligent and started doing those things because it needed to at the time, now those things might be causing more hinderance than help so we explore to see what else might work for your particular body and needs. In-person Alexander lessons typically include non-manipulative touch… essentially connecting nervous system to nervous system (the software to your body’s hardware!) to help your body take on new directions and begin to create new patterns. We might explore this work standing, walking, sitting or even lying on a table. We may explore with your chosen activity or we may work outside of it at least for a time.

Given that I am in my final year, I will be offering Alexander lessons at a reduced cost until I have my certification. If you’d like to schedule an Alexander lesson with me, please hit the contact button and send me a message! If you’re unsure, reach out and let’s chat.
